Cycling is a hobby for some, while others consider is as a routine to keep themselves fit. In both cases, no one would deny a long cycling day. It brings a sense of achievement after covering a seemingly impossible distance which keeps every cyclist on their pedals. For beginners, it may seem like a great accomplishment completing a 10Kms run, but as one grows in this sport, they realise that there are bigger targets to achieve. This does not mean that you should strain their body on a long-distance ride. It becomes more of punishment later if you do not plan your cycling trip properly. One trip can break you halfway if you are not prepared for it physically and mentally. To help you prepare your long-distance trip, here are some pieces of advice from the pro cyclists.
Save the energy
You cannot complete a long-distance cycling trip if you go all out in the very beginning. It is a sport of endurance, and if you lose it in the first 30% of the trip, the rest will just be a huge punishment for you to cover. Try to keep a constant pace and distribute your energy on the basis of the distance you need to cover. Choose a gear which is not too hard to push, but also not too swift to need more work.
It is important that you drink a lot of beverage and eat enough food before you step on your pedals. It is necessary that your body is hydrated and nourished properly. Keep a supply of energy bars and water with you that you can use every 15 minutes to sustain the energy you need for the entire trip.
Divide your trip
Aiming for a long trip can get boring, and you might feel like turning around. But if you are serious about completing it, the trick is called ‘the rule of thirds’. According to this rule, you can divide your distance into three parts. The first one will be an enthusiastic start which will seem exciting. In the second one, your body will really start to develop tension. After this, when you are nearing your goal, you can use everything you have left to push yourself to achieve it.
Be smart of the surroundings
Let nature make the job easy for you. On the trip, you will meet a lot of obstacles, including the hills, the wind, and sometimes bad roads. While this will only come with experience, you will learn to adjust yourself according to the flow of wind, and learn to deal with the off roads by becoming one with your bicycle. If you are in a group, take each other’s help to relax behind each other through the opposite winds while one person pushed the team forward by being at the front. Take tunes in leading the group so that everyone has the same energy level to complete the trip.
